Analysing Theatrical Trailers - 'Mickey 17'

In this next analysis, I consider the theatrical trailer for 'Mickey 17'. This lasts 2 minutes and 17 seconds.

From the outset of the trailer, the audience will note that this is a big budget film and in the sci-fi genre. Robert Pattison is instantly recognisable and so will immediately appeal to a certain target audience between 16 - 25. The main actor gives the voiceover giving an explanation as to the montage of clips which have been edited together. The trailer explains that the director also made 'Parasite', to give an indication of what the film would be like. In the background Frank Sinatra is singing. This contrapuntal use of music is interesting as it runs completely against the action on screen; Frank Sinatra would usually be considered recognisable in a positive context, not in relation to the repeated death of a protagonist in a film. The story arc explains very clearly how the protagonist became involved in the programme and how he dies on many occasions. The clips present a great adventure in different settings and in space in what appears to be the arctic, amongst others, and so takes the audience on a great adventure. Other actors in the film are specifically named, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yuen, Toni Collette and Marc Ruffalo. Including Mark Ruffalo may attract those who like Marvel films. The ending of the trailer is particular well put together with some fast-paced editing and multiple action scenes with an explosion. We finally see that it is to be released on 3 July 2025.
