Analysing Reviews in Thriller Posters and Trailers
Analysing Reviews in Thriller Posters and Trailers
I am going to be creating at least one trailer that will contain reviews of my film alongside a poster that may also contain reviews and star ratings. To obtain a better idea of the form film reviews take, the type of language used in film reviews and an idea of the types of publications that produce film reviews, I am going to look at a number of trailers and posters from existing films from my genre to help me create my own reviews.
'Bring Them Down'
- The language used in the reviews is often associated with the film's genre, and in the reviews for 'Bring Them Down' the words "gripping", "chilling" and "intense" all reflect audience responses to thriller films.
- One of the reviews directly references the genre "thriller", so the viewer will have some kind of idea as to what it will be and what to expect in terms of the action and the storyline.
'Nightcrawler'
- The language used in these reviews is also associated with the thriller genre as the film is described as "deliriously thrilling". The Hollywood Reporter promotes it and boosts its attention as they say it is "destined to be a classic", whilst it is also made to sound artistic "a modern masterpiece".
- The review from The Playlist directly references the thriller genre.
'The Imitation Game'
- The language in these reviews present the film as unmissable, for example "Best British Film", "Classic" and "Superb".
- Empire's review directly references the thriller genre, calling it "A Superb Thriller".
- We can also see the high ratings, showing only four and five stars to prove how good it is.
'Blink Twice' TV Spot
- The language used in these reviews are typical of the thriller genre, for example "shocking", "jaw-dropping" and "intoxicating", making it sound dramatic and intense.
- The Jam Report references genre directly by calling it a "thriller".
'Take Shelter' TV Spot
- The language in these reviews present it as a "masterpiece" and "mesmeric" which makes it sound very riveting. These reviews also say how they like the actors acting by calling it a "shattering performance".
